Week 1: Cyberfeminism and Internet art

The theoretical part of the first week will focus on cyberfeminism as a performative lens-based practice. Focusing in particular on self-portraiture as an example, selected case studies will expose participants to key cyberfeminist concepts and ideas negotiated by artists in genres such as photography, internet art and digital art. Participants will create a short Instagram, YouTube or TikTok video inspired by case studies.

Week 2: Lens-Based Performance and  Video Art

Week two will introduce participants to intersectional feminist video art practice from the 1960s to the present. We will uncover how artists use the medium of video to highlight how intersections of race, gender, age, class and other forms of discrimination shape our lived experiences.  Practical exercises focus on performance and movement exercises and camera techniques including camera operation, framing and lighting scenarios. Participants will create a short performative video or video memoir.

Week 3: Ethnic Futurism and Augmented Reality

This week, we will delve into ethnic futurism and augmented reality practices as a place for performative articulation. Participants will learn about the history of futurism and AR in the art historical canon and contemporary art discourse. The in-class and homework assignment encourages participants to experiment with AR and the aesthetics of speculative fiction.

Week 4: Professional Development

We will wrap up the course with a professional development seminar which includes information about distributions, archives, collections grant writing and exhibition proposals and design. This class will also provide participants the opportunity to share artwork and texts with the class and instructor to receive feedback.
