Week 1: Fluxus & Performance

Group Introductions, journaling on class hopes & expectations
Introduction to the Fluxus movement within historical context including its relationship to Futurism, Dada, Minimalism and Conceptual Art
Introduce how artists use scores as creative outlines in their artistic practice

Week 1 assignment: Inspired by Erwin Wurm’s 1-minute sculpture project, perform and record a 5-minute still performance interacting with an object and the architectural space. Document with photographs
 

Week 2: Whose Work Is It Anyway? Interpreting and Re-performing Other Artist Scores

Participants will share their week 1 exercise and their key learnings from the work
Introduce the Fluxus Workbook and Hans Ulrich Obrist Do It project 
In-class exercise: Write a score for another class participant to perform
Discuss issues of authorship and creative license

Week 2 assignment: Choose a score either from your classmate or from Fluxus Workbook or Do It book, re-visioning and re-performing it in a space and manner of your choosing. Document it with video

 

Week 3: Visual Scores and Mind mapping a Performance

Participants will share their week 2 exercise and their key learnings from the work
Discussion on creating a visual score, incorporating image, sound, drawing, video or other media as either a final work or as inspiration for a larger project
In class exercise: create a memory map of your ideas for final performance
Group discussion on ideation and concept execution for final performance, creating your own score and performance inspired by Fluxus (open themed)

 

Week 4: Final Performances

Participants will present scores and documentation of final performances and/or sketches of the proposed future performance
Group discussion of key learning over the 4 weeks.
Discuss creating a score for a professional proposal/opportunity
Final journal session
